To hear Jesus saying quite clearly that he had come to cause division between people – even close family members – would have been shocking to those who heard him, and can be shocking to us today.
But behind it all, Jesus is saying that he wants to be at the centre of the lives of those who follow him. Not that others aren’t important but that he should be first.
Following Jesus isn’t intended to be a “soft option” but one that transforms everything. How are you going to respond to his call this Christmas?

Questions to think about:

  • How do we disown Jesus? How can we acknowledge him (vv32-33)?
  • How do you respond to the demand of Jesus to be first in your life (vv34-37)?
  • How can you support each other in taking up your cross and following Jesus (v38)?
