Samuel – a young, inexperienced boy – hears God speaking to him directly and giving him a message of judgment.

Eli – a old, experienced priest – initially fails to recognise that God is speaking but then, through Samuel, hears that he and his family are going to be judged.

Whatever our age, experience of God, involvement in Christian work – are we prepared and ready to hear God speaking to us and then act upon it?

Questions to think about:

  • Think about the story from Eli’s and then from Samuel’s perspectives. What are the things that really speak to you or challenge you?
  • What does this story tell us about God?
  • How do you respond when you hear God speaking into your life – directly, through the Bible, through someone else?
