Judgment has been avoided, God has acted in mercy and Jonah is fuming.
This isn’t how the world should work, this is how he was concerned that God would act, everything is falling to pieces – so much so that he didn’t see how he could carry on.
But God challenges how he is reacting, how he is feeling, how he thinks about others who need God’s mercy.
Is God challenging you in similar ways today? If so, how will you respond?

Questions to think about:
- What do you find to criticise Jonah for in this chapter, what do you find to commend him?
- Jonah seems to have been angry because God extended his mercy and forgiveness to those who Jonah thought didn’t deserve it? Have you ever felt the same way?
- How does this story challenge you in your relationship to God and your engagement with others?
